George Eliot translated Das Leben Jesu by Friedrich Strauss from German into English. The translation had been started by Rufa Brabant. She handed it over to Eliot when Rufa married Charles Hennell, brother of Eliot’s friend Sara. The translation took Eliot two years and she received £20 for the two years of work. The translation was finally published in 1846 and neither Eliot nor Rufa Brabant were credited as translators in the publication.
