This is a photograph of Rufa Hennell, taken in Rome around 1865. George Eliot was friends with Rufa and Eliot was bridesmaid at Rufa’s wedding. Rufa had started translating Strauss’ Life of Jesus but stopped when she got married. George Eliot took over the translation work.
