As George Eliot made more money from her writing, she was able to afford more expensive clothing. This dark blue silk taffeta dress was worn by Eliot. It consists of a boned bodice and long skirt, with delicate bead, velvet and lace trims. The dress is hard to date exactly as it has been altered over the years.
