This supper set is thought to be the property of George Eliot. It was given as a wedding present on her marriage to John Cross in 1880. She married John Cross, not long after George Henry Lewes’s death in October 1879. Cross was a family friend and her financial advisor. They were only married for about 6 months until Eliot’s death in December 1880. After her death Cross edited her letters in, George Eliot: A Life.
