This barley jug belonged to George Eliot’s father, Robert Evans. The jug has small holes in the spout to keep the pieces of barley in the jug when you pour a drink.

Robert Evans was a land agent for the Arbury Estate in Nuneaton. As a child Eliot often went out with him on his visits meeting lots of different people living and working on the Estate. When she became a writer this experience would help her give realism to characters and situations.
