In 1849 Cara Bray travelled to Europe with her husband Charles and their friend George Eliot. This sketch book was used by Cara Bray while on holiday.

Cara drew scenes from their travels around Europe and also made two sketches of Eliot.

This trip came at an important time in Eliot’s life. Her father passed away just before the trip, leaving her with a limited income. At the end of the trip Eliot would have to decide how to support herself financially.
