This self portrait was made before Cara married Charles Bray. Cara became a writer of children’s stories and school text books, as well as a radical thinker on religious and political matters. She became friends with George Eliot when she lived in Coventry. Charles and Cara Bray lived at Rosehill and there introduced George Eliot to many intellectuals and radical thinkers.
