This portrait shows Dr Robert Herbert Brabant (1781 to 1866). In 1843 Dr Brabant (then in his early 60s) employed George Eliot to translate Strauss’s Das Leben Jesu and the two became romantically involved. He was father to Rufa Brabant who originally started translating Strauss before her marriage to Charles Hennell.
