This is a watercolour portrait of Charles Christian Hennell probably dating from around 1835. The artist is unknown but it may have been painted by Charles’ sister Cara. Charles Christian Hennell was part of the Rosehill Circle in Coventry and was friends with George Eliot. He was the author of An Inquiry into the Origins of Christianity. This publication had a strong influence on George Eliot.
