Simcox got to know Eliot when they both lived in London and mixed in similar circles. Simcox was also an author, contributing to journals and writing books. She was very active in advancing women’s rights. She also campaigned for fairer working conditions through her trade union work. A heartfelt letter Simcox wrote after the death of her friend was found in one of the George Eliot Scrapbooks in Nuneaton Library.
